While his team does not shy from using international grape varietals, including an award-winning Chardonnay, they also make the most of indigenous varietals, as in this 100% Graševina white (otherwise known as Italian Riesling), a grape varietal that is among the most representative and distinctive of this Balkan country.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWith its light-yellow color and greenish highlights, this wine combines sensations of white flowers and fruit, notably pear and vine peach, with a discreet hint of rhubarb on the nose. On the palate, it reveals delicate tastes of citrus peels with a hint of pineapple, all wrapped in fine acidity. Croatians recommend it alongside a paprika sausage called Kulen. Round and silky on the palate, it also reveals very pleasant notes of garrigue and rosemary. Throughout, it retains a lovely acidity, making it the ideal companion to ceviches or seafood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFew people are familiar with malagousia, as with the 350 to 400 indigenous grape varietals found in Greece, because this Mediterranean wine country has long given priority to volume over quality. It was only in the 1970s and 1980s that a few pioneers took an interest in their winegrowing heritage. In 1996, Michalis Giannikos, who had just inherited this estate located in Mycenae in the Peloponnese region, followed this trend, taking over the old family business (the estate dates back to 1896). However, he modernized the winery, introducing new techniques while planting vines in the Corinth region, a narrow strip of land that connects the Peloponnese to mainland Greece and from which this wine originates. Today, his vineyards cover eight hectares, all of which are organically grown. It does, however, reveal beautiful ashy, almost toasted notes, as well as fruit aromas such as mirabelle plum and quince. On the palate, you'll appreciate its acidity and finely integrated oak. Normal: this Obeidy is aged for sixteen months in French barrels. But the Wardy family, another of the region's prominent families, acquired a stake in the company in the 1970s, and decided to diversify by offering wines as well. Founded in 2008, this young winery, which takes its name from the Arabic word elixir (a rejuvenating serum), upholds the diversity of Lebanese terroirs: the team operates six separate vineyards located between 950 and 1,800 meters above sea level in different regions of the country. Some face the sea, as in Batroun in northern Lebanon, where the Ixsir winery is located. Others are perched higher up in the Lebanese mountains, benefiting from a more continental climate. At harvest time, the grapes are transported in refrigerated trucks. Cold-stored, they are pressed the day after their arrival at the winery. Each grape variety and plot are vinified separately, and blended only after fermentation. The aim of the owners, especially oenologist Gabriel Rivero, a veteran of Sociando-Mallet, an estate in Bordeaux's Haut-Médoc region, is to make great blended wines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith an annual production of over 500,000 bottles, Ixsir has already imposed itself on Lebanese tables, but its wines are also increasingly sought-after internationally. Designed to be a \"delightful summer rosé\", it's easy to drink, without any fuss and is ideal as an aperitif, as well as a wonderful accompaniment to grilled meats and salads.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis success owes much to the Toumas, originally a family of distillers well known in Lebanon: in 1888, grandfather Elias Touma founded a distillery producing arak - the local Levantine anisette similar to Greek ouzo - which is now renowned throughout the Middle East. His son, then his grandchildren, broadened their horizons by taking an interest in wine and planting vines on the land they own around the historic distillery. Their first vintage dates back to 1998. There is a rich honeyed mouthfeel but at the same time it is vibrantly fresh with good acidity, which makes it deliciously drinkable lightly chilled. Perfect to drink on its own or with seafood, light salads, and appetizers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChâteau Musar was the first producer in Lebanon to achieve organic certification for its vineyards. Remote and unspoilt, the Musar vineyards were 'organic' by default before the term was coined. Most are located in the Bekaa Valley, cradled between two mountain ranges running parallel to Lebanon's Mediterranean coastline. Vines have been cultivated here for at least 6,000 years. The Hochar family's philosophy of respect for the environment means that the 180 hectares of Musar vineyards are managed with minimal human interference and all the wines are made as naturally as possible. All the grapes are hand-harvested between August and October. In the winery, ambient yeasts do the work of fermentation.
